Vienna, July 16, 2026

Sabine Payer, the most successful Austrian alpine snowboarder in history with 21 World Cup victories, has ended her active career at the age of 33 and described the silver medal at the 2026 Winter Games in Italy as her farewell.

The Carinthian announced the end of her career on Thursday via the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). Payer justified the step with the feeling of having reached the right moment after 16 seasons on the World Cup. „Aber es ist nach 16 Saisonen im Weltcup der richtige Zeitpunkt und fühlt sich auch richtig an“, she was quoted as saying in a press release.

The decision was not an easy one for her, the athlete said. From her perspective, the decisive factor was the Olympic season finale in Milan and Cortina. „Die Olympischen Spiele mit dem Gewinn der Silbermedaille waren ein unglaublich schönes Happy End und ein cooler Abschluss einer genialen Zeit, in der ich viel erleben durfte“, Payer explained.
