Berlin, August 12, 2026

On August 12, 2026 in Berlin, Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider spoke out in favor of amending the Basic Law to better protect against the consequences of global warming.

According to Schneider, the state should be able to act more strongly on heat protection in the future. The SPD politician advocated anchoring protection against the consequences of global warming in the Basic Law. The amendment is intended to give the federal government more options to respond to increasing heat stress.

In addition to the constitutional anchoring, Schneider cited the conversion of rivers into near-natural systems. He said: Vielmehr brauche es einen "Rückbau" der Flüsse, "weg von Kanälen hin zu natürlichen Flüssen mit mäandernden Flussarmen, mit Flussauenlandschaften, die das Wasser in der Fläche halten"
