Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, July 14, 2026

Five years after the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister President Gordon Schnieder (CDU) apologized to those affected on Tuesday evening for the state's failure at a memorial event in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.

In the night from July 14 to July 15, 2021, heavy rain in the Ahr Valley and in large parts of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as North Rhine-Westphalia triggered a devastating flash flood. According to official figures, a total of 185 people died, 135 of them in the Ahr Valley; one person is still considered missing today. The infrastructure of an entire region was destroyed, tens of thousands of houses damaged, villages devastated, bridges torn away, and roads flooded.
