School bus accident in Uganda: At least 21 dead on return from school trip

Investigations into the Cause of the Accident

Following the disaster, the authorities launched investigations into the cause of the accident. The focus is on the question of why the driver lost control of the vehicle. Possible factors such as the condition of the road, weather conditions or technical defects on the bus are being examined.

Police announced that further information on the disaster would be released as soon as the investigations allow. Family members of the victims were informed of the incident. Local media reported grief in the affected communities.

School bus accidents with a high number of fatalities have occurred repeatedly in Uganda in the past. Critics have pointed for years to the condition of many vehicles, the lack of safety equipment and, in some cases, inadequately trained drivers. For the families of the at least twenty children killed and the adult victim, a period of mourning has now begun. Local communities organized initial memorial services on Friday. The national government offered condolences to the bereaved and announced support.

Police in Uganda called on witnesses of the disaster to come forward in order to reconstruct the sequence of events. The exact number of injured and their state of health are also to be updated in the coming days.
