From Denials to Announcement

Speculation about a comeback had intensified after Williams registered again for anti-doping tests with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) months ago. A comeback at an official tournament is only possible after six months in the ITIA test pool – this deadline was met on February 22, according to media reports.

Williams herself had initially denied comeback rumors. On the platform X, she wrote: "Oh my god, you guys, I'm not coming back. This wildfire is crazy." Later, on a TV show, she avoided a clear commitment, saying: "This is neither a yes nor a no. I don't know, I'll just wait and see what happens."

Now she has posted a video of herself on a tennis court with the comment: "I guess you all have heard the news already." Under a social media post about her comeback, the phrase "The Queen is back" appeared.

Voices of Appreciation

Williams herself stated: "Queen's Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter." She added: "On grass, I've had some of the most significant moments of my career. I'm looking forward to competing again on one of the most iconic stages in sports."

WTA Chairwoman Valerie Camillo honored the returning player, saying: "Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all time, whose legacy extends far beyond the tennis court. Her return is a testament to her passion for competition, and I can't wait to see her compete against a new generation of top players."

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova also expressed her appreciation: "Serena has taken the game to a new level, and it's great for the sport that she continues to push boundaries and return." Navratilova, at 43 years and ten months, was previously the oldest former world number one to attempt a comeback after retirement.

A Career of Superlatives

Williams' sister Venus Williams, 45 years old and a seven-time Grand Slam champion, remains sporadically active on the tour. She competed at the Australian Open in January with a wildcard but was eliminated in the first round.

Serena Williams held the world number one ranking for approximately 320 weeks and won over 70 titles on the international WTA Tour during her career. Seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles were won at Wimbledon.

With 23 major titles, she is just one title behind Australia's Margaret Court on the all-time list, who won 24 Grand Slam singles titles. It is not yet known whether Williams will also compete in singles.

The Return to Grass

Her designated doubles partner Victoria Mboko said cautiously at the French Open: "I want to let her have her moment. If she's ready for a comeback, she should announce it."

Williams gave birth to her second child almost a year after the US Open in 2022. Her last official match was at that tournament in New York, where she was eliminated in the third round.

Outlook on Wimbledon

The grass-court season is considered Williams' preferred surface. Should she compete at Wimbledon, she would return to the scene of her greatest triumphs. The organizers of the Berlin tournament have not yet officially confirmed the plans, but information from the German Press Agency aligns with a report from the Bild newspaper.
