Serena Williams reportedly requests wildcard for WTA comeback in doubles

Speculation about a Williams comeback has circulated since last year, when she re-registered for doping tests — a necessary step for any player returning to professional competition.

In January, when asked directly about a potential return, Williams gave an enigmatic answer. "Das ist weder ein Ja noch ein Nein. Ich weiß es nicht, ich werde einfach abwarten, was passiert," she said, which translates to: "It's neither a yes nor a no. I don't know, I'll just wait and see what happens."

The Venus Factor

The comeback narrative carries echoes of her older sister Venus Williams, who at 45 remains sporadically active on the WTA Tour. Venus won a singles match last July for the first time since August 2023, overcoming a series of injuries and a uterine surgery the summer before last.

Venus, a former world number one herself, has repeatedly struggled with physical setbacks throughout her later career. Her continued presence on tour provides a template for elite players extending their careers well into their forties.

Serena's potential return in doubles rather than singles may reflect a strategic approach to managing physical demands. Doubles requires less court coverage and shorter points, reducing strain on the body.

The partnership with Mboko would pair one of the sport's all-time greats with a rising talent nearly 25 years her junior. Mboko, born in 2007, was not yet born when Serena won her first Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open.

Neither Williams nor tournament officials have publicly confirmed the wildcard request. The Telegraph cited unnamed sources close to the situation, while Roddick's podcast provided the detail about Mboko as the intended partner.

If the comeback materializes, it would add significant star power to the Queen's Club event and generate intense interest ahead of Wimbledon, which begins later in June. Williams's last Grand Slam appearance was at the 2022 US Open.

The WTA Tour has seen several high-profile returns in recent years, including those of Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki, though none with the combined legacy and age profile of a 44-year-old Serena Williams.
