Series of acid attacks on door locks spreading in Vienna – police warn against skin contact

Compared with the first documented cases, the perpetrators' method has changed. According to investigators, the burglars no longer restrict themselves exclusively to cash, jewelry and electronics. In several apartments, weapons were also stolen from safes, which further increases the dangerousness of the crimes.

Weapons now part of the loot

The criminals exploit the damage to the locking mechanism caused by the acid in order to subsequently gain entry to the apartments with little force. Vienna police assume that the perpetrators deliberately target properties whose residents are absent, for example during the day or in the evening hours.

Residents who discover traces of such an act on their front door are asked not to remove the liquid themselves under any circumstances and to notify the police immediately. Skin contact with the substance can lead to serious injuries, which is why the authorities recommend particular caution.

What residents should do

The Vienna State Criminal Police Office has launched an investigation and is asking the public for information regarding suspicious observations. People who have seen individuals with bottles or containers in front of front doors in the affected districts are asked to come forward. Footage from door cameras could also be relevant to the investigation.

The police also advise preventive measures. These include lockable doors with additional security features, good lighting of the entrance area and attentive neighbors. Those traveling should also inform neighbors and watch out for an overflowing mailbox, which suggests absence.
