Barcelona, October 5, 2026

Violent storms caused severe flooding in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia on Saturday and during the night of Saturday to Sunday, killing at least three people.

Extent of the Storms

According to Spain's national weather service, Meteocat, some areas received more than 200 liters of rain per square meter over the weekend. The region around Barcelona and neighboring areas in northern Spain were particularly hard hit. The masses of water transformed streets into raging torrents and flooded subway stations, ground floors, and underground parking garages.

Rescue services were deployed on a large scale to free people from vehicles and buildings. According to reports from Spanish media citing authorities, tourists also had to be brought to safety, as hotels and holiday accommodations were affected. The emergency services set up provisional emergency shelters.
