After severe storms and a landslide in northwestern China, the death toll has risen to 21 according to authorities, while in the south of the country a dam burst and hundreds of snakes escaped from a farm.

Background: Tropical Storm and Dam Burst in Guangxi

The storms hit China with full force on Wednesday. In the southern province of Guangxi, a tropical storm brought torrential rain, as a result of which a reservoir dam broke in Hengzhou, near the metropolis of Nanning. The city of around 900,000 inhabitants was submerged, according to reports. The official Xinhua news agency reported on the developments, citing local authorities.

Particularly devastating was a landslide near the city of Longnan in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu. As Xinhua reported on Wednesday, 33 people were buried there. Only twelve of them survived, and seven survivors were injured. According to authorities, the death toll rose to 21.
