In the city of Warendorf, a fire department spokesman said there were currently around 20 operations, including a lightning strike on a rural property.

In Münster, the situation was described as extremely busy. "Wir haben Vollarm hier," a fire department spokesman told the German Press Agency, indicating that all available resources were deployed.

Emergency Services Overwhelmed

The storm also caused significant disruption to transportation. Train services on the RE 6 (RRX) line between Hamm and Minden in East Westphalia were suspended, according to the website Zuginfo.NRW. On the roads, fallen trees blocked sections of the A1 and A30 motorways in the southwest of the region.

In Hannover, the NDR 2 Plaza Festival 2026 was temporarily evacuated due to the weather. Around 15,000 visitors were moved into the adjacent ZAG Arena as lightning and thunder passed over the open-air venue.

Temperatures across the affected regions reached up to 33 degrees Celsius, according to the DWD, while northern areas remained slightly cooler at a maximum of 25 degrees. The combination of high heat and the advancing cold front created the conditions for the intense thunderstorms.

Transport and Events Disrupted

Fire departments across the region remained on high alert into the night, working to pump out flooded cellars and clear roads blocked by debris. No serious injuries were immediately reported, but authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors until the storm passed.

The storm system is part of a broader pattern of unstable weather moving across Germany from the southwest. Forecasters warned that further thunderstorms could develop overnight, though the intensity was expected to gradually decrease.

Local authorities activated crisis coordination centers in several districts to manage the high volume of emergency calls and coordinate responses between fire services, police, and technical relief organizations.

The DWD's warning system, which ranges from level 1 (official weather watch) to level 4 (extreme weather warning), placed Friday's event at level 3, indicating a significant threat to life and property from lightning, falling trees, and rapidly rising water levels.

Residents in affected areas were advised to secure loose objects outdoors, avoid basements during heavy rain, and stay away from trees and power lines during the storm. Emergency services emphasized that many flooded basement calls could be prevented by moving valuables to higher ground ahead of time.

The evacuation of the NDR 2 Plaza Festival proceeded in an orderly fashion, with organizers and security staff guiding attendees to the indoor arena. The festival was able to resume later in the evening once the immediate danger had passed.
