Heat pumps have established themselves as the dominant heating technology in German new buildings: 73.6 percent of the around 58,900 residential buildings completed in 2025 use them as their main energy source, as the Federal Statistical Office announced.

This means that the share of heat pumps in new buildings has more than doubled within ten years. In 2015, heat pumps were still the predominant heating technology in just over 31 percent of the 105,600 residential buildings constructed at that time. Experts attribute the increase to legal requirements, rising energy prices, and technological progress, among other factors. The Federal Statistical Office classifies heat pumps as a renewable energy source because they use geothermal and environmental thermal energy.
