The former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74, the emirate announced on July 12, 2026.
The office of the emir said the death of the former head of state was a "great loss for the nation." Sheikh Hamad had ruled the Gulf state on the Persian Gulf from 1995 to 2013 and fundamentally modernized it during that time.
Sheikh Hamad took power from his father in a bloodless coup in 1995. Over the following nearly two decades, he transformed the small Gulf state into a regional power with far-reaching diplomatic influence.

Under his leadership, Qatar massively expanded its natural gas production. Today, the country is one of the world's largest gas exporters. These revenues formed the basis for extensive investments in infrastructure, education, and culture.
