Ship sunk off the coast of Yemen after being fired upon – crew rescued

In the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, attacks on civilian shipping have repeatedly occurred since the beginning of the Israeli offensive against targets in Iran. The militant Islamist Houthi movement, which controls large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, has attacked cargo ships with missiles and drones on several occasions in recent months and in some cases sunk them.

The Houthis accuse Western states and Israel of complicity in the situation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and view attacks on ships with links to Israel or owned by Western entities as part of their operations. Shipping companies flying other flags have also repeatedly come under fire in the process.

The incident underscores the risks to global merchant shipping on one of the world's most important sea routes. A significant share of world trade passes through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, in particular deliveries of oil and petroleum products, whose buyers are located in Europe and Asia.

Impact on world trade

International shipping companies had increasingly requested warships and escort operations by Western naval forces in recent months. Several major container lines temporarily rerouted their journeys around the Cape of Good Hope, extending delivery times and raising transport costs.

India's Shipping Minister Sonowal expressly thanked the Yemeni rescue forces for the swift recovery of the crew. The exact circumstances of the attack, including the question of whether the ship was deliberately targeted or whether another vessel nearby was meant to be hit, are the subject of ongoing investigations.

The government in New Delhi has been following the incidents in the Red Sea with concern for months, as several thousand Indian seafarers are deployed on ships worldwide. With each new incident, pressure grows on the international community to agree on robust protective measures for civilian freighters.

Reactions and diplomatic efforts

Observers see the expansion of the attacks as a sign that the tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran are having direct effects on civilian shipping routes. Cargo ships under neutral flags, as in the current case, have also come under fire.

The coming days are expected to show whether the crew members can receive medical care and be flown back to their home countries. Diplomatic channels between India and the authorities in Mocha, as well as international bodies, are considered to be active.

The shipping company behind the "MSV Faize Noore Oliya" had initially not made any public statement following the sinking. Insurers and flag states routinely examine recourse claims against the parties responsible for the damage in such cases.

Protective measures for merchant ships

Security experts emphasize that, despite international escort missions, no complete protection for merchant ships in the Red Sea can be guaranteed as long as attacks from Yemen's coastal area continue.
