Following the renewed US attacks on Iran, shipping traffic through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz dropped dramatically on Thursday, shrinking to six cargo ships.
Trigger of the Escalation
The United States had attacked around 90 military targets along the Iranian coast during the previous night. According to its own statements, Iran responded with dozens of attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain as well as on a Jordanian military base. Reports of casualties or damage were not initially available.
According to data from provider Kpler, by 4:30 p.m. (CEST) only six cargo ships had transited the strait in the Persian Gulf. On Wednesday, the figure had still been 21 ships, according to the data. Most of the ships that had passed through the strait since Wednesday had either switched off their transponders or chosen the northern route, which requires Iran's permission. The southern route along the coast of Oman was barely used – Iran is opposed to the use of this passage.
