Tehran, July 7, 2026

On July 7, 2026, a tanker loaded with liquefied gas from Qatar was struck by an "unknown projectile" near the Omani coastal town of Lima in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire, while negotiations between the United States and Iran on a war's end have been suspended.

Background of the incident

The British military and the British maritime security authority UKMTO reported the incident some eight nautical miles off the Omani coastal town of Lima. According to this, a fire broke out on board the merchant vessel. No one was injured according to the available information, as reported by the German Press Agency citing UKMTO.

Iranian state television declared that the ship had previously ignored warnings. According to this, "the tanker loaded with liquefied gas from Qatar was attacked after it ignored warnings." There was no official confirmation from the Iranian leadership initially. The details could not be independently verified either.

The Iranian military had reaffirmed the previous Thursday that control over the strait lay solely with Iran. A statement read: "All oil tankers and merchant ships are required to use exclusively the route designated by the Islamic Republic." At the same time, the leadership warned: "Any disregard of this directive (...) will be met with an immediate and determined response by the armed forces."
