London, July 9, 2026
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) warned in London on July 8, 2026 against transiting the Strait of Hormuz, after renewed attacks on civilian ships in recent days.
Situation in the strait
The strait between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula is one of the world's most important shipping lanes. According to the IMO, the situation is currently so tense that ships should avoid the passage for the time being. Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez described the situation as "volatile" – meaning unstable and barely predictable. At the same time, he strongly condemned the attacks on several ships over the past two days.
Dominguez called on flag states, shipowners, and all relevant authorities to no longer expose seafarers to unnecessary danger.
