Solar Boom in Germany: Iran War and Planned Subsidy Cuts Drive Photovoltaic Expansion

Association chief Carsten Körnig sees several causes for the unexpectedly strong increase. On the one hand, the Iran war, ongoing since the end of February, has intensified concerns about the reliability of fossil energy imports and driven demand for domestic power generation. On the other hand, the federal government's announcement to cut subsidies for private solar systems has triggered a so-called pull-forward effect: anyone who had already been considering a system now wants to have it installed before the end of the subsidies.

Appeal to the Federal Government

In this context, Körnig warned against an abrupt stop to solar subsidies and appealed to the federal government not to slow down expansion. He said verbatim: "An stärkerem Ausbau von Photovoltaik und Batteriespeichern führt klima-, energie- und wirtschaftspolitisch kein Weg vorbei." Solar energy is a central building block for achieving climate targets, making the energy supply more crisis-resilient, and lowering electricity costs for households and businesses in the long term.

The background to the current debate is federal austerity plans that also affect the subsidies for private solar systems. Industry representatives warn that a swift elimination of subsidies may lead to additional installations in the short term, but could dampen the investment willingness of many homeowners in the medium term. Körnig therefore calls for a reliable political framework that provides planning certainty while also creating incentives for storage solutions and tenant electricity models.

Installers at Their Limit

The association expects the half-year figures to be revised upward, since numerous systems are only reported shortly before the reporting deadline. Based on experience from previous years, up to 8.3 gigawatt-peak may actually have been newly installed in the first half of the year. Installers in the country currently have their hands full, according to the industry.

It is noteworthy that demand from the private sector had cooled significantly last year. Rising interest rates, high component prices, and uncertainties about future subsidy conditions had caused many homeowners to hesitate. The geopolitical situation and the announced end of subsidies have now apparently overshadowed this reluctance.

Solar Expansion in Figures

In total, more than six million photovoltaic systems with a cumulative capacity of over 125 gigawatts are now installed in Germany. The country thus remains one of the leading solar markets worldwide. The dynamic of the first six months suggests that new installations this year will significantly exceed the previous year's level.
