Woodstock, New York, 25 May 2026

Sonny Rollins, the legendary American jazz saxophonist revered as the ‘Saxophone Colossus’, died at his home in Woodstock, New York, on May 25, 2026, at the age of 95, his publicist announced.

The death was confirmed on the artist’s official online page with the statement: ‘Mit tiefer Trauer und inniger Liebe geben wir das Ableben von Sonny Rollins bekannt.’ No cause of death was immediately given, but the announcement noted he passed away in the afternoon.

Rollins’s career spanned more than seven decades, during which his powerful, hard-blowing solos earned him a reputation as the greatest improviser in jazz. His 1956 album ‘Saxophone Colossus’ became a cornerstone of the genre, its title track and the calypso-inspired ‘St. Thomas’ remaining essential listening.
