Japanese entertainment conglomerate Sony has announced that, starting January 2028, it will cease production of physical game discs for the PlayStation and distribute new titles exclusively via digital channels.

Sony communicated the plans on Wednesday. The company justified the move with a clear shift in purchasing behavior: „Digitale Spiele hätten physische Datenträger inzwischen deutlich überholt." In the past year, discs had reportedly accounted for only 20 percent of video game revenue. The market leader in blockbuster console titles such as GTA 6 had already opted for this path: „GTA 6" erscheint für Playstation und Xbox ausschließlich per Download, auch mit Code-Boxen im Einzelhandel.

The transition expressly applies to all new releases on the platform, not only to titles from Sony's own PlayStation Studios. Sony controls the production and licensing of all PlayStation discs and is therefore the sole supplier – major publishers such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom, and Rockstar Games depend on Sony's manufacturing and certification process and cannot produce discs for the console themselves.
