Sophia and Noah are once again the most popular first names for newborns in Germany in 2025, as the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache (GfdS) announced in Wiesbaden.

Data Basis and Recording

The GfdS has published an annual list of the most frequently given first names in Germany since 1977. Nationwide, Sophia and Noah are also the most popular. This means the two names top the ranking as in previous years. They had already led the way in 2023 and 2024 with Sophia/Sofia and Noah.

This emerges from an evaluation by the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache (GfdS) in Wiesbaden for the year 2025. This time, the basis is data from around 750 registry offices, which together transmitted almost 830,000 entries to the society. In this way, almost 91 percent of all first names given in Germany in 2025 were recorded.
