Alongside the established favorites, other names are also gaining in importance according to the statistics. For example, Liyana is appearing more frequently in the lists, indicating a growing diversity in name choices in Switzerland. Classic names such as Maria also remain relevant according to the FSO and continue to be given frequently.

Diversity in names is increasing

Overall, the analysis reflects the ongoing trend toward short, catchy first names, the FSO writes in its announcement. The agency evaluates the data from the civil registry offices in the cantons annually and publishes it as a comparative series over several years. This allows long-term shifts in the population's naming preferences to be tracked.

According to the statistics, parents often orient themselves toward supra-regional trends influenced by media, prominent families, and international fashion phenomena. Regional particularities within Switzerland – such as between German-speaking Switzerland, the Romandy, and Italian-speaking Switzerland – are reported separately in supplementary evaluations by the FSO.

Methodology of the FSO survey

The publication of the baby name statistics is one of the regularly highly noted announcements by the Federal Statistical Office. It is published at the end of the summer quarter each year and attracts great interest both from media and on social networks.

According to the FSO, only the first names recorded during registration at the civil registry office are evaluated for the statistics. Double or multiple names are not included in the ranking. This makes the annual list a direct reflection of naming decisions at the time of birth.

With a view to future years, the FSO intends to further refine the data basis and plans to increasingly evaluate additional characteristics such as linguistic-regional differences and the parents' origin. This is intended to provide the statistics with even more differentiated insights into naming practices in Switzerland in the future.
