Statistik Austria evaluated the respective first names of all children born in 2025. In total, 36,887 girls and 39,180 boys were born in Austria in the previous year, according to the evaluation published on Thursday.
Emma defends the top spot for girls
For girls, the name Emma tops the rankings. Emma was given 559 times, corresponding to 1.5 percent of all newborn girls. According to the data, the name first entered the top 10 in 2010, ranked second in the years 2013 to 2018 as well as 2024, and had already claimed the very top spot in 2019 and 2022.
The remaining places among girls are taken by Emilia with 552 entries in second place, Marie with 516 entries in third place, and Mia with 452 entries. Sophia (437), Anna (423), Lena (413), and Valentina (413) hold positions five through seven, with Lena and Valentina sharing seventh place. Laura follows with 373 entries in ninth place, and Johanna with 362 entries in tenth place.
Noah in first place among boys for the first time
For boys, Noah stands at the top with 674 given names, corresponding to 1.7 percent of all boys born in 2025, marking its first time in the leading position. Noah first appeared in the top 10 in 2021 and had reached third place the year before. Paul follows with 625 entries in second place, and Maximilian with 607 entries in third place.
Behind the podium positions, Elias ranks among the boys with 596 entries in fourth place, and Jakob with 595 entries in fifth place. Felix (550), Leo (530), Leon (505), Jonas (487), and Lukas (460) round out the top ten of the most frequently given male first names in Austria in the previous year.
Long-standing constants in the top ten
The general director of statistics at Statistik Austria, Manuela Lenk, explained the development of the top performers in a press release. „Bei den Buben nahm erstmals Noah den Spitzenplatz ein, nachdem er 2021 erstmals in den Top 10 war und im Vorjahr Rang 3 erreichte“, Lenk was quoted as saying. Noah thus displaced the long-standing front-runner Paul, who had held the top position in 2018, 2021, and 2023, and was ranked second in 2017, 2019, and 2024.
Paul has been continuously present in the top 10 of boys' names since 2012. Maximilian, who placed third in the 2025 evaluation, has been among the top ranks since 2005. Also to be found in the top places are the names Felix, Leo, Leon, Jonas, and Lukas, which are all represented in the top 10.
For girls, the Statistik Austria evaluation also shows long-standing constants. Emilia was the most popular girls' name in 2023 and 2024 and had to settle for second place in 2025. The name Marie, which landed in third place, was already ranked third in the previous year. Emma, for its part, has appeared uninterrupted in the list of the ten most given girls' names since 2009 and has been in the top ten continuously since 2013, and since 2019 always among the first three.
Concentration on the most popular names
Another notable aspect of the annual statistics concerns the concentration on the most popular names. In total, 12.2 percent of all girls born in 2025 and 14.4 percent of all newborn boys received one of the ten most popular first names.
The shifts compared to the previous year are moderate. Among boys, Jakob, who was in fourth place in 2024, slipped back by one position to fifth place and was overtaken by Elias, who himself had been in fifth place the previous year. This led to a change in the lower ranks of the top ten as well.
For the evaluation, only the respective first names were counted, excluding special characters. This methodology ensures that the statistics capture the first officially registered first names and has formed the basis for the annually published ranking of the most popular baby names in Austria for years.
Methodology and background of the survey
The ranking has been dominated for many years by classic, short first names. While among girls especially short, vowel-rich names such as Emma, Mia, Anna, and Lena shape the picture, parents continue to favor traditional names for boys such as Paul, Maximilian, Felix, and Jakob, all of which have been represented in the top ten for years.
Statistik Austria is the central institution for official statistics in Austria and regularly publishes evaluations on a wide variety of social areas. The annual first name statistics enjoy particularly great media attention, as they allow conclusions to be drawn about social trends and preferences among young families.
Continuity of the first name landscape
Overall, the evaluation makes clear that the first name landscape in Austria is characterized by remarkable continuity. Some names such as Emma, Paul, or Maximilian have appeared in the top ranks for many years, while new additions such as Noah among boys manage to make the leap to the top. In the future as well, it can be expected that the top places will be dominated by a manageable group of classic first names.
