South Korea scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday after Russian military aircraft entered the air defense zone declared by Seoul.

South Korea's Ministry of National Defense stated that the interceptors were launched immediately following the violation of the air defense zone. The Russian aircraft were escorted until they left the monitored airspace, according to Seoul.

According to the ministry, the intruding aircraft were Russian military jets that had entered the jointly controlled airspace with Russia without prior coordination. However, a direct confrontation did not occur, as the Russian aircraft turned away after a short time.

Background of Deteriorating Relations

The background is the significant deterioration of relations between Seoul and Moscow. "South Korea's relations with Russia have deteriorated since South Korea joined the Western sanctions against Russia over the war of aggression in Ukraine," the Ministry of National Defense stated. South Korea had joined the sanctions imposed by Western states against Russia, which drew sharp criticism in Moscow.
