The Spanish national football team launches into the World Cup in North America on Monday (6 PM/ServusTV) in Atlanta against World Cup debutant Cape Verde, going into the tournament with great ambitions and an exceptional squad.
After the 2024 European Championship title, the trophy is to be lifted again at the World Cup in North America. The prospects for a second World Cup title after 2010 could hardly be better for the European champions. "We know it will be difficult in a strong group, but we must believe that we can do it," said center-back Roberto Lopes, who is captain at Shamrock Rovers in Ireland and faces Spain with Cape Verde.
Team boss Luis de la Fuente is aware of the delicate mission and warns against underestimating opponents: "We have to approach every game as if it were our last, respect every opponent, and be ready to fight for the maximum." On paper, his team counts among the tightest circle of favorites, even if de la Fuente is tempering expectations: "As a favorite, you haven't won anything yet, and you have neither more goals on the books nor an advantage in the game. Surviving the group stage must be the goal."
