The SPD's top candidate for the Berlin election, Steffen Krach, has ruled out a coalition with the governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) after the September 20 vote, while emphasizing that, with 74 days to go until election day, the SPD will not force a collapse of the coalition.
Krach justified his stance with the SPD's internal assessment that a joint senate with Wegner would be unacceptable for the people of Berlin. "74 Tage vor der anstehenden Wahl werde ich keinen Koalitionsbruch forcieren, das können wir den Berlinerinnen und Berlinern nicht zumuten. Sie haben es am 20. September selbst in der Hand," Krach said, according to dpa. At the same time, he did not rule out any coalition beyond the AfD — meaning a coalition with the CDU remains fundamentally possible, but only without Wegner.
