Stampede at Hindu temple in Bihar kills seven during Shravan festival

Shravan pilgrimage draws large crowds

The Shravan month draws millions of pilgrims to Shiva temples across northern India, particularly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. Temples typically see their largest crowds on Mondays, considered the holiest day of the week for Shiva worship, with devotees lining up for hours before dawn. The combination of restricted space and a sudden scare proved fatal at Ashok Dham.

Officials said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine whether safety protocols were followed at the temple and whether electrical infrastructure near the site had been properly maintained.
