Mass Panic at Hindu Temple in India Leaves Dead and Injured

Mass events at Hindu festivals regularly draw hundreds of thousands of worshippers in India. As recently as the summer of 2024, dozens of people were killed in a stampede at a religious gathering in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

In the south of the country, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, there have also been repeated serious incidents at major religious occasions in recent years. The Indian government subsequently announced measures to better manage such crowds.

The Ashok Dham temple in Bihar is a well-known pilgrimage site that is particularly busy on holidays honoring the Hindu deity Shiva. On such days, the number of visitors far exceeds the regular capacity of the grounds.

Indian security experts have pointed out for years that the lack of clear entry regulations and adequate escape routes at large events represents a recurring safety risk.

The authorities in Bihar announced an investigation into the incident. The focus is on the question of how the rumors about the allegedly fallen electricity pole spread so quickly among those present.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the early morning hours, when particularly large numbers of worshippers were present at the temple. Eyewitnesses reported a wave of fear spreading through the crowd as soon as the first cries rang out.

Bihar's Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance for the bereaved. The incident was also received with dismay at the national level.
