Wiesbaden, 13 July 2026

At the end of 2025, around 7.8 million people in Germany were severely disabled, according to the Federal Statistical Office, corresponding to a share of 9.4 percent of the total population.

Definition and Classification

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) published the figures on Monday in Wiesbaden. According to this, people are considered severely disabled if the pension offices have recognized a degree of disability of at least 50 and have issued them a valid ID card. In the last survey at the end of 2023, the figure was 7.9 million.

The share of severely disabled people in the total population is currently 9.4 percent. As Destatis announced, however, the comparability of the figures was limited due to the cleanup of administrative data in Hesse and Saxony.
