The Stiegl Brewery is discontinuing freight operations on the approximately 3.4-kilometer-long Stieglbahn in the city of Salzburg at the end of the year, bringing more than 100 years of railway tradition to a close.
The siding track, opened in 1919, was primarily used to deliver brewing malt to the Stiegl Brewery. Since 2020, the Salzburg-based railway transport logistics company SETG had been responsible for operations, while the wagons and locomotives had previously belonged to the brewery itself.
Each week, the company transported three to five wagons over the track to the brewery — a volume that, according to Stiegl, corresponds to around 40 truck trips per week. The second SETG customer on the section is currently the wastepaper recycling company Papyrus, which most recently transported 80 to 100 wagons per year.
