A study involving the University of Glasgow and the Medical University of Graz has concluded that the use of e-cigarettes can increase the risk of prediabetes by 34 percent.

The study evaluated demographic and clinical data from several thousand adults, including individuals who exclusively use e-cigarettes, as well as so-called dual users, who use both e-cigarettes and conventional tobacco cigarettes. The values were compared with a control group that used neither product.

Methodology and Data Basis

The analysis focused on parameters of glucose metabolism, in particular insulin resistance and fasting blood sugar. The researchers found that e-cigarette users exhibited on average higher values for insulin resistance than non-users. In medicine, this is considered a central preliminary stage of type 2 diabetes.
