At the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology in Munich, a research team led by Marco Witkowski of Charité Berlin presented new analyses on xylitol, according to which high blood levels of the sugar substitute could be associated with a significantly increased risk of serious cardiovascular events.
Xylitol, short for xylitol, is a sugar alcohol that is frequently used as a low-calorie sweetener in chewing gum, candies, baked goods, and sugar-free beverages. It also occurs naturally in small amounts in fruits and vegetables and has been marketed for years as a purportedly safer alternative to household sugar. The new evaluation calls this assessment into question, at least for high concentrations in the blood.
