Styria: Further showers and thunderstorms expected on Saturday and Sunday

Yellow thunderstorm warning activated

GeoSphere Austria has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning, which is active on Saturday from 14:00 to 22:00. It affects East Tyrol, Carinthia, southern Styria, and southern Burgenland. Possible impacts named by the weather service include small debris flows and locally flooded streets.

On Sunday, the sun will initially appear once again, but the calm weather will not last long. After the dissipation of haze and fog patches, the day will start friendly in many places. From midday, convective clouds will form again, before rain showers and thunderstorms spread to all parts of the country from the northwest during the afternoon. It will also not stay dry for long on Sunday.

Sunday brings hardly any calmer weather

At the same time, a brisk northwesterly flow will cause further cooling. On Sunday, the maximum values will only be between 21 degrees in the Ausseerland and 27 degrees in the southeast, where the sun is likely to last the longest. With the thunderstorms, temperatures will also drop, and it will become noticeably cooler.

After a brief period of calmer weather, Styria remains under the influence of changeable air masses. In the affected regions, strong thunderstorms may develop locally on Saturday afternoon and evening, as a disturbance system moves through a still unstable air mass.

According to the current "ORF" weather forecast, the weather on Saturday will remain unsettled across large parts of Austria, although it is no longer quite as hot. In the eastern lowlands, temperatures of up to 32 degrees are possible, while generally they will range between 21 and 28 degrees Celsius. At an altitude of 2,000 meters, midday temperatures will be a moderate 10 to 16 degrees.

Safety advice from the experts

Sunshine and clouds will alternate on Saturday across large parts of Austria. On the northern side of the Alps into northern Burgenland, brisk, at times strong westerly to northwesterly winds will occur. Especially in the south and southeast it will remain partly humid, and isolated, partly thundery rain showers are possible in the early morning hours and during the morning across large parts of Austria.

From midday, rain showers and thunderstorms will become more frequent and will particularly affect Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, and Styria. The eastern lowlands are expected to be reached only by isolated showers.

GeoSphere Austria points out that residents of the affected warning areas should close windows, doors, garage doors, roof hatches, and skylights. Local flooding may occur, which can put basements under water. People in the mountains should seek shelter in good time when thunderstorms approach, storm warnings on lakes must be observed, and bodies of water must be left immediately when approaching severe weather.
