The US National Weather Service (NWS) warned of "catastrophic damage and a life-threatening situation" as the eye of the storm crossed the southernmost island of the Northern Marianas. With wind speeds of 290 kilometers per hour and hurricane-force gusts well above that, "Bavi" caused severe devastation on the island of only about 1,500 inhabitants. The NWS had already spoken beforehand of a "very dangerous" typhoon and described the situation as "extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation".
