Background of the incidents

At a substation in Dormagen, emergency responders identified indications of a possible attempted sabotage. As Cologne Police announced, traces were secured that point to deliberate interference with the facility. The incident is part of a series of disruptions affecting energy infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg, which authorities are monitoring with heightened attention.

The day before, it had become known that there had been an incident at a substation in Bergheim near Cologne, where sabotage is also suspected. Cologne Police took over the investigations in both cases. Interior Minister Herbert Reul commented on the matter with reference to the ongoing investigations, stressing that the incidents at two locations are probably no coincidence.
