Swiatek Stunned by Kostjuk in French Open Round of 16 as Top Seeds Fall

Swiatek's exit is the latest in a series of early departures for the top seeds in the women's draw. World number two Elena Rybakina and world number four Coco Gauff had already been knocked out of the competition before the round of 16.

Top Seeds Tumble

Kostjuk's path to the last eight included a victory over Viktorija Golubic, the Swiss player who had previously caused an upset of her own. The Ukrainian has yet to drop a set since the opening round.

In the quarterfinals, Kostjuk will face either her compatriot Elina Svitolina or Switzerland's Belinda Bencic. A meeting with Svitolina would guarantee a Ukrainian presence in the semifinals.

What's Next for Kostjuk

For Swiatek, the defeat marks her earliest exit at Roland Garros since 2021. The 23-year-old had been bidding to win the title for a fifth time, a feat that would have moved her closer to the all-time record held by Chris Evert.

Kostjuk, meanwhile, remains in contention for her first Grand Slam singles title. She has never previously advanced beyond the fourth round at a major tournament.

The Ukrainian's aggressive baseline game proved too much for Swiatek, who struggled to find her usual rhythm on the red clay. Kostjuk hit 28 winners to Swiatek's 14 and converted five of her eight break-point opportunities.

The crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier gave Kostjuk a standing ovation as she closed out the match in just under 90 minutes. She will now have two days to prepare for the biggest match of her career.
