Iga Swiatek, the four-time French Open champion, suffered a shock defeat in the round of 16 on Sunday, losing 7-5, 6-1 to Ukraine's Marta Kostjuk.
The Polish world number three had appeared on course to take the opening set when she served for it at 5-4, but her game unravelled from that point. Kostjuk, ranked 15th in the world, reeled off nine of the next ten games to seal a commanding victory on Court Philippe Chatrier.
After the match, Kostjuk struggled to process the magnitude of her achievement. "Ich stehe immer noch unter Schock," she said in her on-court interview, expressing disbelief at having beaten a player who has dominated this tournament in recent years.
A Streak Continues
The result continues a remarkable run of form for the 23-year-old Ukrainian, who has now won 15 consecutive matches on clay across the WTA Tour. She is the first player to book a place in the quarterfinals of this year's tournament.
