The Swiss Competition Commission Weko has initiated a preliminary investigation against Google after the company abolished the selection screen for default search engines on new Android devices in Switzerland.

As Weko announced on Monday in a press release, it is examining whether Google's actions unlawfully restrict competition in the search engine market in Switzerland. Specifically, it concerns the recently implemented deactivation of the so-called "Choice Screen" feature during the setup of new Android smartphones. Users in Switzerland can no longer choose between different search engines, but receive Google Search as the preset default search.

Background of the preliminary investigation

According to the competition authority, this is a so-called preliminary investigation. In this phase, it is examined whether there are sufficient indications of an unlawful restriction of competition within the meaning of Swiss antitrust law. Only on this basis does Weko decide whether to open formal proceedings.

Weko also justified its action by referring to the particular significance of default settings in digital markets. This would further consolidate Google's market position.
