A Swiss flight from Zurich to New York triggered the transponder-based emergency code 7700 over the Atlantic on Thursday and subsequently landed in St. John's in the Canadian province of Newfoundland.

The aircraft, operated by Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss, was on a scheduled service from Zurich to the United States on Thursday when the crew activated a general emergency signal over the North Atlantic. As the airline confirmed, it involved the internationally standardised code 7700, which in aviation indicates an urgent, but not necessarily critical, emergency. The crew then diverted the aircraft to St. John's in eastern Canada, where it landed as planned.

On board were 215 passengers and 11 crew members, according to Swiss. Based on current information, no one was injured. Following the landing, the aircraft was inspected by the airline's technicians and the airport fire service. A Swiss spokesperson told the news agency Keystone-SDA that the company was taking the incident very seriously and was working with the Canadian authorities and the manufacturer to determine the cause.
