A Swiss flight, designated LX9, that was traveling from Chicago to Zurich on Tuesday issued a mayday call over the Atlantic and carried out an unscheduled landing on the Portuguese Azores island of Terceira.

The aircraft was on the scheduled transatlantic service from Chicago to Switzerland when the crew issued a mayday over the Atlantic. The crew then decided to alter course and head for the Azores island of Terceira, as Swiss confirmed on Tuesday.

According to the company, the landing on Terceira was carried out as planned and safely. The airline initially provided no information on the number of passengers affected or the duration of the diversion.
