Reactions from politics and the transit alliances

SBB, the country's largest transport company, had repeatedly pointed in the past to the growing burden caused by energy and infrastructure costs. An SBB spokesperson said that the company took note of Alliance Swisspass's decision and would examine its implications for its own range of products internally.

Consumer advocates expressed partial satisfaction with the moderated step but continued to insist on an independent review of the underlying cost calculation. Only with transparent figures could it be assessed whether the remaining surcharge is actually justified, argued the Consumer Protection Foundation.

Meanwhile, travel agencies and online platforms are preparing for the start of sales of the new tickets and the new GA. Customers must prepare for higher prices, even though the increase is now smaller than initially feared.

Outlook on the pricing round

Alliance Swisspass announced that it would communicate the prices as usual in the autumn. The exact franc amounts for the GA, the Half Fare travelcard, and the discounted tickets are also to be made public then.

Observers see the correction as a sign that political and media pressure on public transport pricing is having an effect. The decision is also seen as a test case for how robust the procedures agreed upon in the public transport sector for price coordination are.

For the coming years, the industry expects further discussions on a modernized revenue distribution key between the federal government, cantons, and transport companies. There too, prices for the GA and tickets are likely to remain a central topic.
