Switzerland's population growth is decelerating, with the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) projecting the 10-million mark may not be reached until the 2040s, as net migration declines and the birth rate remains low.
Current Population and Political Context
The country's population stood at 9,153,829 on the morning of May 28, according to a real-time estimate by the FSO, with 60 more people added by the afternoon.
Since the early 1980s, Switzerland has grown by 42 percent. The right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) is pushing a "No 10-Million Switzerland" initiative, which will be put to a vote in June.
According to the FSO's reference scenario, the 10-million threshold could be crossed for the first time in 2041. In a high-growth scenario, it could happen eight years earlier, while a low-growth scenario sees the population peaking at around 9.3 million before slowly declining to 9 million.
