Bern, 06 July 2026
Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister and his Austrian counterpart Klaudia Tanner announced on Monday in Bern at a joint press conference a deepening of cooperation between the two countries on ground-based air defense and arms procurement.
Background of the Talks
The talks in Switzerland focused in particular on joint procurements and a planned exchange of data in airspace. The two ministers emphasized that modern defense systems can hardly be financed without coordinated procurement. Martin Pfister stated verbatim: "Bei den gemeinsamen Beschaffungen stehen wir im Europa erst am Anfang".
According to both ministries, the focus of the cooperation is ground-based air defense. Austria has already placed a major order for 30 Skyranger systems with the manufacturer Rheinmetall Air Defence in Zurich; the volume is in the three-digit million range according to the minister. Switzerland also plans to procure the Skyranger system for drone defense, but only for the year 2030.
