Taipei, August 17, 2026

Taiwan plans to spend NT$1.1225 trillion (approximately CHF 28.5 billion) on defense in 2027, thereby crossing the one trillion Taiwan dollar threshold for the first time.

According to the Taiwanese Presidential Office, the planning covers both the regular budget and several special budgets. This would represent a significant increase in the defense budget compared with previous years.

The spending plans are part of the efforts of the government under President Lai Ching-te to modernize the armed forces in light of the ongoing threat from China. Taiwan has been governed independently of China for decades, but Beijing regards the island as part of its territory and continues to lay claim to it.

The background to the record spending is the tense security situation in the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese parliament has repeatedly approved additional special budgets for arms procurement and the modernization of the armed forces over the past years.
