Taipei plans to artificially slow down mobile internet in parts of Taiwan for two half-hour tests next week; the background is an ongoing military exercise.
According to government information, mobile data connections in the north and center of the island republic are to be slowed down during two tests, each lasting 30 minutes, next week. The measure is part of preparations for possible cyberattacks or disruptions to civilian communications. Mainly affected are metropolitan areas, where many people depend on fast mobile connections.
Background: "Han Kuang" exercise
The throttling coincides with the annual "Han Kuang" military exercise, the largest maneuver of the Taiwanese armed forces. In this phase, the army tests, among other things, how it would defend the island against a possible invasion by China. The exercise explicitly takes into account scenarios in which the public communications network is attacked or paralyzed.
