Temin Joguncic from Baden-Baden is Europe's Best Croupier

The jury of the European Casino Association evaluated not only technical skill but also criteria such as exceeding customer expectations, appropriate body language with eye contact, recognizing unusual behavioral and betting patterns, and showing open palms when handling money. The Black Jack scoring round lasted 20 minutes.

Evaluation Criteria Beyond Technical Skill

After the announcement of his victory, Joguncic was visibly moved. "It is incredible," he said. It was great to win the European Championship in his hometown. Speaking about himself, he said: "Mental arithmetic has always come easily to me." Even during the competition, he had noticed his own nervousness: "I can tell that I am nervous," he said.

From a Temporary Job to the European Top

Joguncic was born in Baden-Baden and began working at the casino at the age of 19 as a temporary helper before his studies. "Actually, I just wanted to earn a bit of money before university," he recalled. He is now a three-time consecutive German champion, most recently in April. He explicitly understands his profession as more than just a technical activity. "We are not just machines that process everything," he said. Croupiers are entertainers and service providers.

Prevention as Part of the Profession

Joguncic also emphasized the social responsibility of the profession. "As a croupier, you also have responsibility for people," he said. Casino employees are trained to recognize gambling addiction and to refer affected individuals to specialized services rather than handling such cases at the table. Stefan Grupp of the Landesstelle für Suchtfragen explained that croupiers and dealers are an important interface between gaming operations and prevention. "The best croupier in Europe is not only technically precise, but actively protects the health of players."

The European Dealer Championship is regarded as the European championship for croupiers and dealers. The disciplines include Roulette and Black Jack, with side competitions such as sorting gaming chips and quickly calculating correct payouts mentally. The organizer is the European Casino Association.
