Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: Foreign Minister Wadephul speaks with US Secretary of State Rubio about Iran

On Monday, Federal Foreign Minister Wadephul and US Secretary of State Rubio held a telephone call that, according to the Federal Foreign Office, dealt with Ukraine and Iran. International observers view the telephone call between Wadephul and Rubio as a signal of unity. Both sides, it is said, emphasized the importance of a stable sea lane and spoke out in favor of de-escalation. However, no concrete measures were named in the Federal Foreign Office's communiqué.

Effects on the Global Economy

Developments in the Strait of Hormuz have a direct impact on global energy prices. Should the strait be impaired on a lasting basis, rising crude oil prices and supply bottlenecks would be likely. Analysts point out that even a temporary closure would hit the global economy hard.

In Germany, it is above all the major shipping companies based in Hamburg and Bremen that are following the developments with concern. These companies are heavily dependent on routes through the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
