Tesla plans expansion of Grünheide plant, targeting up to 7,500 vehicles per week

As reported by Deutschlandfunk on July 19, 2026, Tesla sees itself in a unique position with this undertaking. The expansion of the entire production chain – from the drivetrain to battery cells through to research and development – is "in dieser Form einzigartig in Europa". The "Tagesspiegel" had previously reported on the plans as well.

In the annual report of Tesla Manufacturing Brandenburg SE for 2025, it states: "Für das Geschäftsjahr 2026 prognostiziert die Gesellschaft eine deutlich steigende Produktionsmenge im Vergleich zum Vorjahr." The plant was opened in March 2022 and at the end of 2025 had around 11,000 employees, including temporary workers, according to the report.

Mixed results for fiscal year 2025

Despite the expansion plans, the past fiscal year was mixed. Revenues declined from 7.7 billion euros in 2024 to 7.1 billion euros in 2025. At the same time, however, the Tesla subsidiary closed fiscal year 2025 with a higher annual net profit of 77.1 million euros – an increase of roughly 20 million euros compared to the previous year.

Production fell short of the prior-year level: In 2025, 202,000 vehicles rolled off the lines in Grünheide, 9,000 fewer than the year before. Capacity utilization stood at 54 percent, slightly below the 56 percent recorded in the previous fiscal year.

Grünheide as a European hub

Tesla views the Grünheide site as a central hub for the European market. According to the company, more than 30 markets are already supplied from Brandenburg, with further markets to be developed. The combination of vehicle assembly, battery cell manufacturing, and research at a single site is considered a distinctive feature compared with other European car production facilities.

With the planned increase in weekly production, the company aims to significantly improve the recently weaker utilization and strengthen its position in competition with other electric car manufacturers. The expansion of battery cell manufacturing is a key element in binding more of the value chain to the site.

Outlook and market environment

Observers see the plans as a signal of Tesla's long-term commitment to the Grünheide site, even though the 2025 business figures were mixed. The opening of the plant in March 2022 had attracted considerable attention at the time; since then, Grünheide has developed into one of the company's most important locations in Europe.

The now-announced production expansion comes at a time when the European market for electric cars is overall under pressure. Tesla is therefore banking on economies of scale and greater vertical integration to secure profitability. Whether the targets will be achieved also depends on market developments and demand for e-cars in Europe.
