Theater Play "Passion Timmy" Processes the Fate of the Stranded Humpback Whale

Actor Enrique Fiß, known from the television series "Großstadtrevier", plays a central role. He describes how much anger boiled over on social media when some wanted to let the animal die, while others wanted to save it at all costs. "Am Ende hassen sich alle gegenseitig, dabei war es das Ziel, etwas Positives zu bewirken", he criticizes, and he also views the appropriation of the whale's fate with concern. "Auf einmal wird auch von rechten Influencern und Podcastern der Verfall des deutschen Staates anhand des sterbenden Wals begründet. Das ist ein sehr gefährlicher Moment."

The Appropriation of the Whale

The production draws on real voices from the debate at the time. For example, the play quotes statements from a top politician who spoke of the whale appearing to him in a dream, as well as remarks from a MediaMarkt founder who considered society too capitalist. "Wenn ein Spitzenpolitiker anfängt, darüber zu sprechen, dass der Wal ihm im Traum begegnet ist, dann ist das schon ein sehr komischer Moment. Oder wenn ein Gründer von Mediamarkt sagt, dass wir vielleicht als Gesellschaft zu kapitalistisch geworden sind, frage ich mich, was passiert hier gerade?", says Fiß.

According to Fiß, the second half of the evening is dedicated to the question of how such an event is instrumentalized. "Wie dieses Thema aber aus der esoterischen und aus der rechten und nationalen Ecke gekapert wurde, aus derselben, die mit dem Spektakel dann auch Profit gemacht hat, wie das Ganze instrumentalisiert wurde, das ist etwas, was wir ganz klar kritisch sehen und thematisieren wollen", he explains. The evening attempts to approach the topic in three parts, with the focus on the question of where the empathetic moment is actually to be located.

An Evening in Three Parts

In doing so, the makers deliberately play with boundaries. "Wir spielen da natürlich mit einer Grenze und müssen schauen, wo können wir mal rüber, wo gehen wir wieder einen Schritt zurück", Fiß describes the artistic approach. At the same time, the team hopes for a lively discussion: "Wir wünschen es uns, dass es hoch hergeht, ohne dass es explodiert."

At the close of the evening, the Berlin band Tulpe will give a concert; the band landed a streaming hit with the deliberately provocatively titled song "Sprengt den Wal". Afterwards, a discussion round is planned, in which, among other things, the question of whether one can agree on common F acts is to be negotiated. "Dass wir uns darauf einigen können, dass es Fakten gibt. Doch das, so Fiß, müssten einige vielleicht erst wieder lernen."

Musical Finale and Discussion

Fiß also emphasizes the role of activism, which plays an important function in the play. "Ebenso dieser Moment von Selbstwirksamkeit, von dem jede Person, die sich mal aktivistisch engagiert hat, weiß, wie gut er sich anfühlt", explains Fiß. The production thus also picks up on the experience of many people who had advocated for the whale at the time.

The premiere of "Timmy – Die Hope stirbt zuletzt" is scheduled for 11 July at 7:30 pm at the Hamburger Ernst Deutsch Theater.
