Görlitz, Germany — May 18, 2026
A historic multi-family building collapsed in central Görlitz on Monday afternoon, leaving three people missing and prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue teams are using sniffer dogs and thermal imaging cameras to search for survivors in the rubble of the collapsed Gründerzeit-era building on James-von-Moltke-Straße, according to local authorities. Police confirmed the dogs have alerted to potential signs of life, though the unstable site — including a shifting gable wall — poses extreme danger to responders.
A fire department crane and heavy equipment are carefully removing large debris, while sensors monitor surrounding buildings for vibrations. Additional specialized federal equipment, including personnel detection tools, is en route to assist, Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) announced during a Tuesday visit to the site.
