Three mountaineers fell to their deaths on the north face of the Gran Paradiso, a four-thousand-meter peak in the Italian Alps, after setting out for the summit in the morning following an overnight stay at a mountain hut.

According to official information, two of those killed were Italian; the identity of the third victim was initially unknown.
