Tractor accident in St. Valentin: Father and three-year-old son seriously injured

Both occupants had to be freed from their situation by the emergency services that were alerted. After initial care at the scene, they were then flown to surrounding hospitals by emergency medical helicopters.

The 36-year-old tractor driver was transported by the Christophorus 15 emergency medical helicopter to the Amstetten Regional Clinic. The three-year-old child was taken by the Christophorus 10 emergency medical helicopter to the Kepler University Hospital in Linz.

Emergency Services and Rescue

Multiple fire departments with a total of 45 responders, rescue personnel, two emergency medical helicopters, an Acute Community Nurse from Haag, and four police patrols were involved in the recovery operation and medical care.

The L85 state road connects Haag with St. Valentin and runs through agricultural area in the Mostviertel region. Tractors and other agricultural vehicles regularly travel on this route, sometimes as slow-moving vehicles in public road traffic.

According to initial findings, there is no indication of involvement by other vehicles. The investigations into the exact cause of the accident and the sequence of events are being continued by the police.

Investigations into the Cause of the Accident

The injuries to the father and the child are classified as serious. The authorities initially provided no further details on the current health condition of the two patients.

After the rescue of the persons, the fire departments secured the accident site and recovered the agricultural vehicle. The tractor is believed to have been significantly damaged in the rollover.

During the rescue and recovery operations, there were disruptions on the L85. Drivers were guided past the accident site via local detours.

Legal Situation for Children on Tractors

In Austria, children under twelve years of age or shorter than 150 centimeters may only be transported on tractors if they are seated on a suitable seat with a lap belt and the belt is actually used. The exact seating positions and child seats are subject to strict requirements under agricultural safety regulations.

The St. Valentin police station is conducting further investigations. Experts will reconstruct the sequence of events to determine the exact cause of the vehicle leaving the lane and the subsequent rollover.

Local residents observed the accident and alerted the emergency services. First-arriving firefighters took over securing the scene until rescue personnel and emergency doctors arrived.

Safety Situation in the Region

In the Amstetten district, there have been repeated traffic accidents involving children in recent weeks. Just recently, a three-year-old in Steyr in Upper Austria was struck and injured by a car.

The municipality of St. Valentin and the Amstetten district administration are expected to carry out a safety analysis of the L85 section together with the police. Based on initial inspections, there are no indications of technical defects on the tractor.
